The following Oarsman’s Bay Lodge shared experience comes from Global Travel Stories. Global Travel Stories is run by Australian Traveler, Shane, and through Global Travel Stories he is able to showcase two of his life passions: travel and adventure.

His goal is to ‘inspire people to get out and view the world, to not be afraid and to experience all that there is on offer.’ Fiji is one of the 74 countries Shane has visited in the last 10 years!

He was happy for us to share his authentic experience here for you all to witness…

Fiji September 2019.

We Boarded the Yasawa Flyer for its northernmost journey to the most remote islands of the Yasawa archipelago. Arriving into the beautiful Oarsman’s Bay with its turquoise waters we were greeted by the resort’s staff singing their welcome song and offering fresh coconut juice.

‘The snorkelling at the bay was among the best I have experienced in Fiji!’

After settling into our beautiful Deluxe Ocean View Bure we had a late lunch followed by a boat trip the Blue Lagoon Reef, where we would spend the afternoon snorkelling the reef. The Reef was swarming with tropical fish. Being immersed within such large schools was a surreal underwater experience.

We found out that the small sandy cove around the point from our snorkelling reef was the actual filming location of the 1980’s Brooke Shields classic, The Blue Lagoon.

‘With an early morning boat ride through epic rough seas we arrived at the famous Sawa-i-Lau Caves.’
‘I attended a beach bonfire and a traditional kava reremony.’

With an early morning boat ride through epic rough seas we arrived at the famous Sawa-i-Lau Caves

We explored many chambers swimming through underground tunnels, and we learnt of stories during tribal warfare, where women under children used to hide in the semi-submerged hidden underground chambers.

Later in the evening after dinner Imre, my Hungarian friend, and I attended a beach bonfire and a traditional Kava Ceremony to help us on our way to the land of dreams and a good night’s sleep.

‘At the top I took in the surrounding region to get complete views until the beautiful sunset arrived.’
‘Our hike consisted of sweeping vistas through tall grass and volcanic rocks.’

Once we returned back to the Resort, we exchanged our flippers for hiking boots and headed up the mountain behind the resort. Our hike consisted of sweeping vistas through tall grass and volcanic rock.

We were welcomed half way by small birds gliding on the warm updrafts of air, which seemingly decided to stick with us until the top. At the top I took in the surrounding region to get complete views until the beautiful sunset arrived. Our journey down was lit by a myriad of changing colours under the fading light before finishing under the starlight of the Milky Way.
